Our knowledge helps to ensure healthy soil for production activities.
Plant & Food Research has one of the largest teams of soil science research staff in New Zealand, with scientists specialising in environmental quality, land use management and carbon efficiency, as well as soil chemistry, ecology and physics.
Our soil science research examines organic matter content, soil carbon, nutrient cycling, physical soil properties, soil chemistry and biology. We also study the interactions between soil and plant processes.
Knowledge gained by our soil scientists contributes important data to other groups across the Institute, in particular systems modelling and crop production systems researchers, to ensure production systems maintain healthy soils.
