Sustainably produced kiwifruit with consumer appeal
The kiwifruit industry relies on innovation and quality to maintain a premium in the global marketplace. Research is vital to ensuring the industry is sustainable in the long term with increasing demands from consumers for novelty and environmental sustainability, coupled with pressures to manage the bacterial disease Psa.
Plant & Food Research is developing new cultivars of superior quality that demand a market premium, with a focus on taste, consumer health, novelty and convenience. Our sensory and consumer research identifies the characteristics that appeal most to consumers. We also use molecular biology approaches to identify the plant genes responsible for key agronomic traits, including pest and disease resistance, as well as the characteristics desired by consumers.
We work with the industry to develop orchard management programmes that allow growers to produce kiwifruit of maximum yield and quality, manage pests and diseases, and reduce chemical and water inputs. We also optimise postharvest protocols to ensure fruit are delivered to consumers in premium condition.
