Crop & Fruit Production
Our extensive research orchards and farmland, combined with our controlled environment facilities, allow us to develop crop production protocols and tools.
Our scientists have expert skills in arable and vegetable crops, kiwifruit, pipfruit, stonefruit and winegrapes, as well as pollination and apiculture. We work closely with plant breeders and scientists from the Bioprotection Portfolio to carry out research that enhances crop & fruit production systems.
Plant & Food Research manages more than 300 hectares of research orchards and farmland, with access to additional commercial plots as required. We operate dedicated research orchards in all the major growing regions, including apples in Hawke’s Bay and Nelson, kiwifruit in Te Puke and Kerikeri, grapes in Marlborough, arable crops in Canterbury and stonefruit in Central Otago.
Plant & Food Research also operates the New Zealand Controlled Environment Laboratory (NZCEL), the country’s largest controlled environment (CE) research facility. NZCEL is an automated 14-room facility, located at Palmerston North, that provides CE facilities and services for the acquisition and validation of scientific knowledge by removing the uncertainty of natural climatic variability.
