Summerfruit

Our summerfruit research develops new apricot, peach, nectarine and plum cultivars with traits that provide added value for producers and excite consumers.

Plant & Food Research has over 30 years’ experience in summerfruit breeding, producing high quality cultivars that meet industry requirements. Examples include:

  • Very firm peach selections with crisp fleshed texture and high chill requirements – ‘Scarlet O’Hara’, ‘Coconut Ice’, ‘Southern Ice’ and ‘Southern Star’
  • High coloured, early maturing yellow fleshed peach ‘Springfire’
  • Mid-late season export apricots, including large fruit, red blushed ‘CluthaGold’ and ‘Vulcan’

Our Sumptuous Summerfruit programme is developing new, late-maturing apricot cultivars. The programme combines our experience in summerfruit breeding with research in consumer science and postharvest storage to develop late season cultivars with unique taste characteristics and which store longer.
