Disinfestation Methods

Plant & Food Research investigates new methods of disinfestation for key crops and materials.

Using our expertise in entomology, pathology and postharvest science, our researchers identify alternatives to traditional chemical methods of disinfestation, used to support exports or to protect country borders, including:

  • New fumigants to replace methyl bromide
  • GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) compounds
  • Controlled atmospheres, e.g. low oxygen
  • Waterblasting.

We develop prototypes of new systems and tools and assist in scaling up methods to meet industry requirements. We also work with industry to develop storage protocols that reduce the risk of pests and diseases.
