Diagnostics & Detection

Plant & Food Research develops new tools and techniques to diagnose and detect plant pests and diseases.

Our researchers use modern and innovative approaches for the early detection of plant pathogens and insects, allowing growers to manage the spread of disease and pests and minimising the need for traditional chemical controls. Detection methods include:

  • Virus testing
  • Plant disease diagnostic technology including DNA and ELISA assays
  • Molecular biology to identify new species and new strains
  • Host range testing for pest risk assessment.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other mapping tools are also used to model insect distribution, dispersal and spread.
