Unwanted Passenger

A honey bee larva emerges with an unwanted stowaway – a varroa mite. Capable of infecting and destroying a hive in just a few months, the existence of varroa mites in most countries worldwide means bees cannot survive without mankind’s intervention.

Plant & Food Research is developing non-chemical methods of controlling this pest and breeding varroa-resistant bees that can fight for themselves.
