Native bee

A female native bee, Lasioglossum sordidum, concentrates nectar whilst covered in pollen.

The species is known to forage on plants with small flowers such as blackcurrant and carrot. The bubble at her mouth is nectar being concentrated by evaporating the water. Plant & Food Research is interested in how insects such as native bees contribute to the pollination of key crops.
