Intense Scents

A scanning electron microscope image shows sensilla hairs on the surface of an insect antenna. These sensory hairs contain receptors responsible for the insect’s sense of smell, allowing it to find food and detect pheromones emitted by the opposite sex during the hunt for a mate.

Plant & Food Research uses pheromones and other sensory chemicals to develop lures and alternative methods for monitoring and managing insect pests.
