M.Sc, B.Sc University of Canterbury, New Zealand. RABQSA Lead Auditor (IATCA) for ISO 9001. Former Parliamentary Private Secretary to Ministers of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and a biosecurity and HSNO Enforcement Inspector with the Ministry of Primary Industries.

Why I like working at Plant & Food Research

PFR is a great place to work, with dedicated researchers devoted to supporting our New Zealand primary industries. My job gives me the opportunity to work with many highly skilled biosafety professionals from around the world and to implement international biosafety and environmental compliance best practice within PFR.

My personal highlight working at Plant & Food Research

Since taking on my role as PFR biosafety and environmental compliance manager in 2009 one highlight has been implementing integrated organisation wide compliance systems for PFR. I’m supported by a team of dedicated containment sector and facility managers sharing a common a vision of protecting people, communities and the environment. In 2010, I also joined the fight against Psa-V devastating our kiwifruit industry, by supporting our research scientists manage the complex biosecurity and environmental requirements associated with this devastating unwanted organism.

My work has an impact on our industries by

Biosecurity is fundamental to New Zealand’s economic health and natural heritage. I'm proud to be able to support our primary industry partners by developing PFR’s science capability in the containment and regulatory compliance requirements needed for New Zealand’s biosecurity, readiness and response. Together we help prevent pests and diseases that would damage our primary production industries, native flora and fauna, or our health.

What I love about my job is

My personal mission is ‘to support great scientists work safely, securely and responsibly with risk biological materials’. I enjoy the constant challenge and strong sense of purpose my role brings and I’m highly motivated by our research staff who share a passion for supporting New Zealand’s primary sector.
