DNA-based diagnostics

By analysing the DNA sequence of more than 40 strains of the Psa bacterium from around the world, scientists were able to identify the DNA regions that are specific to the virulent Psa-V strain found in New Zealand. These unique DNA sequences were used to develop an assay that gives a simple positive or negative result depending on whether the DNA sequence, and therefore Psa-V, is present in a sample of plant tissue.
