Interspecific pears

The breeding programme uses parents with heritage from three different species of pear - Pyrus communis, the traditional European pear; Pyrus pyrifolia, including the Japanese (nashi) pear; and Pyrus bretschneideri from China. Each species has different taste, texture, shape and colour characteristics, as well as different characteristics of value to the grower such as pest and disease resistance or storage life. By combining the attributes of each species, new cultivars can be bred that have excellent consumer appeal and command a premium on the global marketplace.
