Keeping society healthy
A national food composition database allows public health services, organisations and dieticians access to nutritional information to inform policy and health guidelines. The Ministry of Health funds the development and maintenance of the NZFCDB to support national nutrition surveys and monitor the diet of the population, supporting the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations standards on improving nutrition globally. Organisations, such as the Heart Foundation, routinely use the database to train consumers on nutrition and product labelling, and for developing diet models and recipes for healthy eating programmes, of particular importance in populations at risk from chronic disease.
