The Waimate West Demonstration Farm is a model farm system used to demonstrate the potential of new and successful farming techniques for use on dairy farms in the region. The 34-hectare farm was established in 1917, and now has around 142 cows.

Paddocks are allocated to specific research for long-term evaluation and demonstration on how to improve farm productivity and profitability. Each project is dedicated to showcasing new methods of dairy farming and reporting on the potential of these methods in real situations. Farmers interested in learning about the activities at the demonstration farm are invited to attend regular open days and farm walks to learn how to implement these on their own farms.

There are eleven dairy demonstration farms around New Zealand, all focused on addressing the needs of a specific region.
